About Kenya!
Kenya is named after a mountain of the same name. The Kikuyu people who lived around present day Mt Kenya referred to it as Kirinyaga or Kerenyaga, meaning mountain of whiteness because of its snow capped peak. Mt Kirinyaga which was the main landmark became synonymous with the territory the British later claimed as their colony.

MADARAKA DAY GREETINGS FROM H.E. AMBASSADOR ELKANAH ODEMBO,
My Fellow Kenyans,
It is with deep pleasure and excitement that I salute you today as we commemorate the 49th anniversary of our attainment of internal self rule. On this day, we take stock of the journey we have travelled as a nation and we ponder about the future of our country to ensure conformity with the dreams of our founding fathers. The journey has been long, and at times, marked with ups and downs. However, this has not deterred us. The resilience of Kenyans is unmatched. Therefore, as we celebrate Madaraka, we need to count the many blessings from God and thank Him for our beautiful country.
Today is a time of great promise for our nation. Our government has shown unrelenting commitment to ensure political, social and economic development of the country through the implementation of the ambitious Kenya Vision 2030, a strategy that calls on us as Kenyans to play rightful roles for our nation¡¯s development. Opportunities have been created for us to make Kenya all what it can be. I therefore, urge you ft news
to join with me in shaping the destiny of our nation.
Thank you and God bless Kenya!
Elkanah Odembo
